Not an extensive treatment of the world of harmonicas by any means; this video is meant to give the beginner a jumping off point for choosing their first instrument. It's part of the fun of learning, to explore different harps. I encourage you all to try a few out once you decide you're going to get a little more serious. Check out the websites given, and look for others too. For those of you outside the U.S. I'm not sure where to go, but I bet the Germans will have no trouble finding harps locally.

I learned from books and CD's. I had one formal harmonica lesson when I was 20. Most people learned on their own, BUT good lessons can speed your progress. Some of the pros on youtube (chris michalek for ex.) do lessons over webcam. That might be worth while. "Harp" does = "harmonica" Suzuki is fine. I'm not sure what models to use, but they are reputable harps.

Not really. I'm pretty un-talented with mechanical things. I've had some pretty good lessons on how to customize, but I haven't committed the time to really learn how. I've played stock harps my whole life, but my first customs are coming in the mail this week.

Hi Dan, I know you play special20 harps but do you customize them?

A "C" harp gives one many options in terms of using published instructional material. However, many beginners have technique trouble that makes sounding the 2draw note difficult on a C harp. It never occured to me, but I saw one of Adam's videos, and he suggested using a D harp to avoid that problem. I guess the 2draw issue doesn't happen with D. I say to suck it up, practice and relax. The 2-draw issue is something easy to get past.
